Affordable Dental Care
Here at Dental Express, we are committed to looking after your complete dental health. We provide excellent NHS treatment options, in addition to a wide range of private and cosmetic dentistry that can be tailored to your needs and budget.
We are a large NHS committed practice and have just under 15,000 registered NHS patients.
Pre Covid-19 we had 6 Dental Associates, 2 were pregnant in March 2020 and were not able to practice face to face dentistry, although like our other associates both took on voluntary roles within the greater NHS. Another Associate left us in February to return home to England as her husband was made redundant from his job in Edinburgh and she could no longer afford to support them both on her reduced earnings. We are a 7 surgery practice but AGP (air generating procedures) may only be carried out in 5 of them as per new guidelines.
Despite this we have continued to remain open and have seen the maximum number of patients possible every single day since last June. We felt it morally wrong to offer a service privately that wasn’t available to our NHS patients therefore we did not like many local practices decline offering the full range NHS treatment in favour of private work and effectively ‘cash in’ on our patients misfortune.
Due to the current restrictions placed upon us by NHS Lothian and Scottish Government it would not be possible to return to pre-pandemic treatment numbers of patients in the practice. We are steadily working our way through the backlog of patients who were mid way through a treatment plan when we had to reduce our range of services last year or those who have temporary emergency treatments over the last 18 months. This was confirmed in writing earlier this by the
Angus Walls, Director of Dentistry at EDI and we are not aware of any further update after that.
We are offering routine exams but due to the restricted numbers of people we can see in the practice, we continue to prioritise those patients who are medically compromised or belong to one of several vulnerable groups. We are not offering an NHS scale and polish at exam appointments, this procedure is classed an AGP and requires enhanced PPE, a hand scale may be offered by the dentist if there is a build up of calculus or if the patient is found to have a periodontal condition (gum disease) they will be asked to return for this treatment. If the patient simply wants a scale or polish for cosmetic stain removal then we may offer a private appointment with our Hygienist.
We continue to use telephone triaging for all aspects of patient care including pain, trauma and routine examinations. At the time of booking a routine exam you will be asked if you are experiencing any pain or have any worries about your dental health, if the answer is no then you may have to wait several months however you will always be told to contact us if your condition changes before your exam appointment.
Dentistry is the only sector of NHS healthcare where you are normally offered 2 preventative check ups a year even if you have no pain or symptoms so please bear with us and remember that over 90% of all dental treatment could be avoided with the correct diet and excellent oral hygiene
Due to the current restrictions within the NHS we are currently seeing patients but we are limited to the amount of patients we can see daily and we are continuing to prioritise pain or urgent care. We are keeping up to date with all the information and recommendations as it becomes available. If you are in need of treatment but it is not classed as priority you will be added to a waiting list for treatment.
Currently we are unable to see patients for Exams / Scale and Polish but we are hoping this changes soon.
As always the health and well being of our patients and staff is of great importance. We would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your patience in these unknown times and we wish you and your family all the very best . We look forward to seeing you all in the future.
Kindest regards from all the staff at Dental Express.

BRIDGES
A bridge is a form of artificial tooth, which is used to fill gaps where teeth have been either extracted or may be missing. Some Bridges have crowns at each end. Others are fixed to the surface of the teeth next to the gap and sometimes a bridge is only fixed to the tooth on one side of the gap. Bridges are made of metal and porcelain or sometimes just porcelain.
What are the Benefits?
- A bridge lets you almost forget that you have missing teeth.
- It can improve the way you look, bite, chew and speak.
- The teeth can be matched to the colour of your own teeth.
- A Bridge can last many years if you keep it clean and there is no accidental damage.
- Natural teeth are protected for wear and tear, and from moving or tilting out of line, which could cause your teeth to bit incorrectly together.
Bridges per Unit
Metal Ceramic | £350 |
Lava/Zirconia/Emax | £450 |
Bridge Pontic | £250 |
CROWNS
The Crown of a tooth is the part which is visible in the mouth. An artificial crown is used to protect and restore a broken, weakened or heavily filled tooth. They can also be used to improve the appearance of discoloured or crooked teeth. Crowns are made of many different materials including metals and ceramics. Dental Express can offer many options for the material we use depending on the requirements and wishes of the individual.
What are the Benefits?
- A crown is strong and can look and feel exactly like a natural tooth. The colour and shape can be matched to your own teeth.
- Depending on the strength of the tooth underneath a crown can last many years if you look after your mouth and teeth and the crown is not accidentally damaged.
- Crowns can also improve appearance.
Crowns per Unit
Metal Ceramic | £350 |
Emax | £460 |
Opalite | £450 |
DENTURES
A denture is a prosthetic device that is used in the mouth to fill gaps in teeth – or indeed put teeth where there are none at all. There are two types of denture – complete and partial. Partial dentures replace a few missing teeth and full or complete dentures are needed if all the natural teeth are missing. The days of ill-fitting “false teeth” are long gone. Dentures can be made from different materials and here at Dental Express we will discuss all the options that are available to you and we will find something that suits your needs and budget.
What are the Benefits?
- If you have lost some teeth, dentures can improve the way you look, bite, chew and speak.
- They are custom made to match your mouth and can be made to look as natural as possible.
- The teeth that are left are protected from wear and tear. Without dentures the natural teeth may move or tilt, stopping your teeth biting together properly.

INLAYS & ONLAYS
You can sometimes have Inlays or Onlays instead of white fillings to repair teeth. Inlays and Onlays are made outside of the mouth in a dental laboratory and are then fitted into the tooth in the practice. An Inlay sits in a hole in the tooth. An Onlay sits on the tooth and builds up its shape. They can be made of tooth colored porcelain, gold or composite. Dental Express are pleased to also offer the latest in inlay materials such as Chameleon and medical-grade Zirconia stone.
What are the Benefits?
- Inlays and onlays are strong and can last longer than fillings
- They are especially suitable for chewing surfaces of the back teeth and for large repairs to front teeth, where it can be difficult to make a white filling look natural.
- They can be matched to the colour of your teeth.
Cost per Unit
Composite | £295 |
Porcelain Inlay/Onlay | £380 |
TOOTH WHITENING
Teeth can vary in colour some are yellower or darker than others. They tend to get darker as we get older and what we eat and drink can affect the colour of the teeth. Tooth bleaching is a very effective way of lightening the colour of our natural teeth. Dental Express provides the products for you to be able to this from the comfort of your own home. A special tray is custom made and you are given this along with the bleaching product. This is completely safe method.
What are the Benefits?
- Bleaching improves the appearance of your teeth without removing any of the natural tooth surface.
- Bleaching is a better option than a crown or veneer if you want to lighten the colour of healthy teeth, as the placing of crowns and veneers involves changing the shape of the tooth.
Cost of Treatment
£275
VENEERS
A veneer is a thin layer of tooth coloured material that is put onto the front of the tooth to make it look better. This is done because the tooth may have been damaged by decay or an accident, or it might be badly discoloured for some reason.
What are the Benefits?
- Veneers can greatly improve your appearance. They hide imperfections and you lose very little natural tooth.
- Veneers can also protect teeth from any more damage.
- If the tooth is strong then a veneer can sometimes be a better option than a crown for improving a tooth’s appearance.
Cost per Unit
Composite | £275 |
Porcelain | £340 |
Chameleon | £400 |
WHITE FILLINGS
A filling replaces part of a tooth that has been lost because of decay or through accidental damage. You may hear the dentist talk about ‘composite, ‘glass ionomer’ and compomer – these are all different types of white filling. White fillings bond to the teeth and blend in with the natural tooth colour to create a more natural appearance. Dental Express can offer white fillings for new fillings and those who wish to replace existing amalgam fillings.
What are the Benefits?
- White filling are less noticeable than silver filings, which may turn black in time.
- White fillings come in a range of shades that can be matched to the colour of your own teeth.
- A tooth needs less preparation for a white filling than silver.
- Teeth need less preparation work when having a white filling placed.

IMPLANTS
Implants are one way of replacing missing teeth. Unlike other forms of replacement teeth, dental implants are small metal or ceramic devices which are inserted into the jaw during surgery. Dental implants provide a foundation for crowns, bridges and dentures. Should you wish to consider dental implants, Dental Express are proud to offer this service with our very own implantologist, which makes this process quick and as comfortable as possible.
What are the Benefits?
- Dramatic results – filling gaps produces an attractive smile-line.
- Eliminates the need for removable dentures.
- Looks, feels and functions as normal teeth – strong enough for eating anything, brush and cared for as normal teeth.
- Local anaesthetic used for a painless procedure.
- Titanium dental implants can be used to support single replacement teeth (using a porcelain crown) or multiple teeth (using a bridge).
- The dental implant won’t move or loosen.
- They act like the roots of natural teeth they help stop progressive bone loss and the shrinking of your jaw bone.
- They won’t affect the way you speak as dentures sometimes do.

ROOT CANAL TREATMENT
Root canal treatment is an often straightforward procedure to relieve dental pain and save your teeth. Patients typically need a root canal when there is inflammation or infection in the roots of a tooth. During root canal treatment, an endodontist who specializes in such treatment carefully removes the pulp inside the tooth, cleans, disinfects and shapes the root canals, and places a filling to seal the space.
What are the Benefits?
- Unlike removing a tooth, root canal will leave you with natural biting force and sensation. A few days after the treatment, chewing, biting, etc. will go back to normal.
- Root Canal saves the tooth and does not remove it.
- Since the tooth is saved, there will be no problems of replacing missing tooth.
